West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. is claiming exemption from filing an information return (Form 990 or Form 990-EZ) as the organizationÕs annual gross receipts is not expected to be more than $ 25,000 per annum.

 

In the event that the annual gross receipts for any year total more than $25,000, the organization will file the information report in the prescribed form.

 

 

Part IV Ð Activities

 

Introduction:

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. has been organized to operate exclusively for public benefit and charitable purposes within the scope of Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

 

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. has formed with a purpose to promote the growth and understanding of soccer, to foster a sense of community for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender players (LGBT) and to generate respect and understanding for the LGBT community from the greater community at large through the sport.  They provide gay and bisexual men in particular a venue for playing soccer and encourage players at all levels to participate and improve by participating in leagues and tournaments. The Club and its activities are open to all who wish to participate regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, or sexual preference.

 

It is a membership organization. Membership is open to all irrespective of sexual orientation. In order to become a member one has to pay a fee of $50.

 

Activities of West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc.:

The various activities of the organization can be classified as follows:

 

1)    Weekly scrimmages

3)    Team participation in Los Angeles Municipal soccer

4)    Team participation in National and International Tournaments

Weekly scrimmages:

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. provides an opportunity for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgender community to play soccer through scrimmages that take place weekly. Through this the organization aims to provide them with a venue where they can foster a sense of team spirit and create respect and understanding for the Lesbian, Gay, bisexual and transgender community from the greater community at large.

 

The organizationÕs volunteer coaches train the team. Scrimmages are used as a means to emphasize those skills and tactics practiced so as to reinforce their relevance. 

 

The activity was started in the Fall of 1981. Scrimmages have taken place in the following venues:

  • West Hollywood Park 647 N. San Vincente Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA.
  • Fairfax High School, 7850 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, CA
  • Poinsettia Park, 7341 Willoughby Avenue, Los Angeles, CA

The future venues are being identifies by the directors. The required facilities are provided at the preidentified venues.

 

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will fund its activity by donations from the public. A fee will be charged for this activity. However any participant who expresses an inability or difficulty in paying the fees will be brought to the attention of the directors who will waiver it off. The volunteers will not be compensated in any way.

Daniel Post (President) and Duc Ta (CFO) are in charge this activity.

 

Weekly Practices:

The Club will be involved weekly soccer practices for the purpose of learning and improving at the sport.  They provide this service weekly to encourage players at all levels to participate and improve their skills.  

 

Practices are typically run by a coach or volunteer who aim at improving the playerÕs skill and competence. Practices involve drills which focus upon basic skills, as well as those which promote team-play, trust, group-cohesion, and advanced soccer skills and tactics. Practices also involve drills designed to increase an individualÕs physical strength, endurance, and agility. Practices are often followed by a ÒscrimmageÓ or short-sided game wherein the specific skills and/or tactics of the preceding practice are brought into the light of actual play. 

Practices are, by design, created to benefit all who choose to attend. It is open to all who wish to participate regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, or sexual preference.   

 

The activity was started in the Fall of 1985. Practices are held at the following time and venues:

  • Wednesday and Friday 7p.mÐ9p.m at West Hollywood Park 647 N. San Vincente Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA.
  • Saturday 10a.m Ð 12 noon at Fairfax High School, 7850 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, CA

The required facilities are provided at the venues.

 

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will fund its activity by donations from the public. A fee will be charged for this activity. However any participant who expresses an inability or difficulty in paying the fees will be brought to the attention of the directors who will waiver it off. The volunteers will not be compensated in any way. The directors of the organization will choose a volunteer to oversee the practices.

 

Team participation in Los Angeles Municipal Soccer:

This activity was started by West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. to primarily foster a sense of community through team sports for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) players as well as to increase the interaction and subsequent understanding and mutual respect of that community with the greater community at large. The Club first participated in the Los Angeles Municipal League in 1986.

 

The team(s) participation in the municipal league provides a venue to test Club membersÕ skills and tactics learned during scrimmages and practices. League games are held every Sunday. Around 40 games are played in year. Usually a 3-5 week break between the two season schedules (Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall). League games are coordinated by the league administrator and, as such, are held at various fields throughout the greater Los Angeles area.  The facilities are provided at the venue.  League fees are $245 per season and $48 per game. However any participant who expresses an inability or difficulty in paying the fees will be brought to the attention of the directors who will waiver it off. To insure against any accidents that take place while playing the sport, all the players are covered by the Los Angeles Municipal League. Duc Ta (CFO) is in charge this activity.

 

Team participation in National and International Tournaments:

To increase and foster a sense of community through team sports for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender players as well as to increase the interaction of that community with the greater community at large, West Hollywood Soccer Club enters one or two teams in the annual International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) International tournament. One to three tournaments, with 6-10 games per tournament are played annually. It is held in a different city each year except in those years in which a Gay Games are held (every four years).  The week-long International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) tournament allows teams to compete in two levels of play (competitive and recreational), as well as socialize with teams from around the world.  Similarly, the Quadrennial-annual Gay Games also brings together international teams who compete in two levels of play, but in a grander scale with many other sporting and cultural events. The Club has also sent players and/or teams to other national tournaments such as the New York Indoor Classic and AtlantaÕs Hotlanta Sports Classic.

 

  

The team(s) participation in International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) tournaments and the Gay Games provides not only a venue to put Club membersÕ skills and tactics to the test of international competition, but also increases participantsÕ sense of camaraderie and belonging in the worldÕs Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community (LGBT). The increased visibility of this community through such international events contributes towards societyÕs greater understanding of them thus benefiting both that larger community and its LGBT subset. 

 

Marco Vides (Director) will be in charge of this activity.

 

The rent charges for the venues are covered by the membership fees and donations from the public. The participants will be provided with uniforms and other supplies required for the sport for free. The activities are funded by the general public. The public is also given the opportunity to sponsor a player for a game. The organization creates awareness about the sponsorship by sending mails and e-mails to individuals and other organizations, the details of which are advertised on the website. An example of a sponsorship letter that is forwarded to the general public has been attached. In order to insure against accidents while playing the sport of soccer all the players of West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will be covered by an insurance policy.

 

 

Fundraising Activities:

In order to acquire additional funds, the organization will engage in fundraising activities such as solicitations through mail, email, in person and through the phone. The organization will also solicit funds from other foundationsÕ and government organizations. A part of the funds will be raised through the fees obtained from the programs conducted by the organization. Funds will also be obtained from sale of T-shirts and garage sales.

 

Promotions & Public Relations:

A part of the organizations time and efforts will be spent on promotions and public relations activities. The activities are also promoted through the distribution of flyers, posters put up at appropriate places and by word of mouth. The organization creates awareness about itself by sending mails and e-mails to individuals and other organizations.

 

The organizationÕs objectives for engaging in public relations are to widen its support base and to promote the organization among potential volunteers. The organization will make use of all opportunities that come its way to promote the mission of the organization.

 

Administrative Activities:

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will also spend a part of its time and resources in administrative activities including regularly scheduled meetings. Such activities will help ensure that the organization works efficiently and is effective in fulfilling its objectives and vision.

 

Responsibility:

The President of West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will carry the overall responsibility for planning, execution and review of all the activities of the organization. The board of directors and the officers will assist the president in the planning and implementation process.

 

The organization will use the services of volunteers to conduct its various activities. 

 

Allocation of Resources:

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will distribute its time and resources for the various activities elaborated above, in the following manner:

 

  1. Weekly scrimmages                                                                                               -35%

á      As the CFO, he will be responsible for financial management and accounting, implementing the fundraising activities.

Part V, Line 5 a Ð Conflict of Interest Policy

 

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. has adopted a ÔConflict of InterestÕ policy as part of its Bylaws. The policy is delineated in Article 9 of the Bylaws.

 

 

Part VI, Line 1a Ð Activities that provide goods, services, or funds to individuals

 

All the services of West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. are carried out in order to promote the growth and understanding of soccer, to foster a sense of community for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender players (LGBT) and to generate respect and understanding for the LGBT community from the greater community at large through the sport as described in detail in the section titled ÔActivitiesÕ on page 1 of this document.

 

 

Part VIII, Line 4 a Ð Fundraising Activities

 

West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc. will receive its donations and gifts from the public. The Directors and Officers of the organization will also conduct the fundraising activities described below:

 

Mail Solicitation: Mail Solicitations will consist of direct mail letters to individuals and businesses, which carry an appeal.

 

Email Solicitations: Email Solicitations will consist of e-mails from a specific individual associated with the West Hollywood Soccer Club, Inc., and will be directed to individuals and other businesses.

 

Personal Solicitations: Personal Solicitations will be addressed to individuals and other businesses.

 

Foundation Grant Solicitations: When required, foundation grant solicitations will be addressed to other foundations.

 

Phone solicitations: The Directors will conduct phone solicitations when required.

 

Governmental Grant Solicitations: When appropriate, the directors of the organization will solicit funds for the organization from relevant government bodies.

 

Other: A part of the funds will be raised through the fees obtained from the programs conducted by the organization. Funds will also be obtained from sale of T-shirts and garage sales. These will be carried out by the volunteers of the organization.
